Matt Mason completed his third season on the sideline with the Privateer men’s soccer team following the 2017 season.
In 2017, Mason helped the Privateers reach the ECAC Tournament, after qualifying for the Skyline Conference Tournament as the fourth seed. The team finished the campaign with 11 wins including five victories against conference opponents. Following the season, the team had three First Team All-Conference selections, while Parker Gallt ’19 also earned All-Region Honors from both the United Soccer Coaches and the ECAC.
During his second year with the program, Maritime finished the regular season with a 9-10 overall record and a mark of 5-6 in Skyline Conference matches. The team also picked up three victories in as many overtime matches on the season. At the conclusion of the year, freshman Michael Rodriguez was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year.
Mason helped the team to its highest victory total since the 2011 season as Maritime finished with an overall record of 12-7-0 on the season. He also helped the squad to its ninth consecutive playoff berth and second straight home playoff contest following the regular season. At the end of the season, the team had two individuals selected to the Skyline All-Conference Second Team.
Having played in the Skyline Conference with St. Joseph’s (LI), Mason knows the league that he will now coach in as he breaks into the collegiate coaching game.
No stranger to leading teams, Mason has run the goalkeeping program for various club groups on Long Island, while also training groups from U-12 teams through U-18 teams since 2011.
In addition to his soccer background, Mason has worked for the New York City Department of Education since 2007, serving in a multitude of roles as a teacher of many subjects for 6th through 8th grades.
Mason is a graduate of St. Joseph’s, having earned his degree in Child Study, while earning a minor in History.
As a player, Mason was the starting netminder for his four seasons with the Golden Eagles and was a multiple All-Conference selection in his years in Patchogue. He holds numerous school records including saves in a season, and saves in a career.
In addition to his school records, he is also amongst the single-season record leaders in NCAA Division III history with 234 saves in 2003 and 233 saves in 2000. In regards to career saves, Mason ranks third all-time in Division III with 831 to his credit, the only collegiate goalkeeper with over 600 saves since the 2000 season.
In addition to his teaching, Mason still remains active as a soccer player as he takes part in several leagues throughout the year.
The Long Island native currently resides in Suffolk County.
