Jonathan Welsh begins his second year at Yale and first as an assistant coach in 2017-18. He served as Director of Operations and Player Personnel during the 2016-17 season.
Welsh came to New Haven after spending five years as an assistant coach at the Kinkaid School in Houston, TX.
At Kinkaid, Welsh helped the boys varsity soccer team to a first-place finish in the Southzone in the Southwest Preparatory Conference for the first time in school history in 2013. Kinkaid won the crown again in 2016. He also taught English for two years during his time at Kinkaid.
In addition, Welsh spent two years as the head coach for the U14 Houston Dynamo MLS Academy team under Academy Director James Clarkson.
Welsh is a 2008 graduate of Creighton University’s Honors Program where he played two seasons, helping the Bluejays to a first-place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2003 and the quarterfinals of NCAA Tournament the same year, falling to eventual finalists St. John’s. Creighton also advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2004 Tournament where they lost in penalties to No. 3 seed Maryland. Welsh then spent one season playing for the University of Dayton, where the team made the A10 Conference semi-final in 2005, losing out to the St. Louis Billikens in a penalty shootout. Welsh finished the season with the third highest point tally on the team.
As a youth player, Welsh spent time on trial with Real Madrid’s U15 La Liga Youth team and was a member of Chelsea Football Club’s U19 Premier League youth team in England.
“Working with some of the most intelligent scholar athletes in the country has always been a dream of mine. There’s no limit to what they can achieve, and I am honored and thankful to Coach Stannard for the opportunity to come to Yale.”
