Daniel Gwyther completed his fourth term at the helm of the Head Men’s Soccer coach at Maritime in 2017. This came after serving as an assistant coach for the Privateers during the 2013 season.
His fourth season saw the Privateers reach new heights as the team qualified for the ECAC Tournament, after qualifying for the Skyline Conference Tournament against Old Westbury. The team finished the campaign with 11 wins including five victories against conference opponents. Following the season, the team had three First Team All-Conference selections, while Parker Gallt ’19 also earned All-Region Honors from both the United Soccer Coaches and the ECAC.
During his third season as head coach, Maritime finished the regular season with a 9-10 overall record and a mark of 5-6 in Skyline Conference matches. The team also picked up three victories in as many overtime matches on the season. At the conclusion of the year, freshman Michael Rodriguez was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year.
In his second year as the team's head coach, Gwyther guided the team to its highest victory total since the 2011 season as Maritime finished with an overall record of 12-7-0 on the season. He also helped the squad to its ninth consecutive playoff berth and second straight home playoff contest following the regular season.
In his first season as the head coach of Maritime in 2014, he led the team to a 9-8-1 overall record including wins five Skyline Conference wins as the team earned the three seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament.
During his one season as an assistant with the Privateers, Gwyther helped the squad to an 8-11-2 overall record, including a 5-3-1 mark in Skyline Conference play, en route to the team clinching the fourth overall seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament.
Over his time at Maritime, Gwyther has helped guide six individuals achieve All-Conference honors with Sheick Wattara and Karl Weber in 2015, Tim Swinehart and Weber in 2014, while Swinehart, Kieran Donnelly and Renato Chira-Farfan obtained All-Conference accolades in 2013. Freshman Michael Rodriguez earned Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year accolades in 2016.
In regards to sportsmanship awards, Neil Dillon ’21 earned his first sporting honor in 2017, after John Nothacker ’17 was selected to the Skyline Conference All-Sportsmanship team for three straight seasons from 2014-16, Dave Sparozic ’14 was selected in 2013and later went on to be named the Skyline Conference's male Sporting Athlete of the Year.
Gwyther was a standout player at the Division I level for the University at Buffalo recording seven goals and six assists in his career. While there, he earned two MVP awards as well as All-Region and All-Conference accolades as both a junior and senior.
He helped the program to its most successful period in school history compiling a record of 46-16-10 in his four seasons (2005-08). Several of his playing career highlights included two trips to the Mid-American Conference Championship game as well as the programs first National Ranking.
Upon completion of his collegiate career, Gwyther was entered in to the 2009 Major League Soccer Draft and was selected to train with D.C. United.
Professionally, Gwyther has represented English sides Watford F.C. and Barnet F.C. and is currently a player for the Long Island Rough Riders of the United Soccer Leagues (USL). During his seven seasons with the Rough Riders the club has secured four U.S. Open Cup births and several postseason appearances, including one Mid-Atlantic Conference title, two East Coast Championships and one Final Four.
Active in youth soccer Gwyther is currently the head coach for the U-16 Boys Massapequa S.C., which competes in the National Premier League, and also coaches for the Long Island Rough Riders Junior Premier programs. In the spring of 2017 he served as the assistant coach under Jerome Vivona and Hofstra Associate Head Coach Gary Book for the 2000 Boys Eastern New York ODP program where he help guide the team to the Region One championship game.
In the Rough Riders off season he plays for the New York Greek Americans, where he has led the club to one CSL League title, three ENYSSA League Cups, two New York State Cups, as well as three U.S. National Cup Final Fours, subsequently winning the National Championship in 2014.
A native of London, England, Gwyther graduated Buffalo with a B.A. in Economics and earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Cambridge in 2010. He holds a UEFA B I Coaching License, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, and the NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma.
Gwyther is currently a Finance Manager at ProHealthcare and resides in Bellmore, N.Y. with his wife Melissa, son Noah, and daughter Briar.
