Andreas Lindberg, one of the most successful men’s soccer head coaches in the country with a career winning percentage of .766 across 12 seasons was named the new Seton Hall men’s soccer head coach on Dec. 11, 2017. Lindberg comes to The Hall after nine years as the head coach of Div. II soccer powerhouse LIU-Post, where he accumulated seven NCAA Tournament appearances.
“We are extremely excited to bring in a coach of Andreas’ caliber to lead our men’s soccer program at Seton Hall,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Patrick Lyons.
“Andreas has proven for more than a decade that he is a successful leader. His teams at LIU-Post rose to national prominence and were a dominant force in the Northeast. We are confident that his preparedness, tactical acumen and recruiting ability will translate to South Orange and help our men’s soccer program compete for BIG EAST Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.”
The LIU-Post Pioneers are one of the most dominant Div. II programs in the country, and it was Lindberg who helped build the program to where it is today. Since taking over as head coach in 2009, Lindberg has led the Pioneers to a record of 139-30-15 (.796), eight East Coast Conference (ECC) regular season championships, six ECC Tournament championships, seven NCAA Tournament appearances and four NCAA East Region championships and berths into the tournament quarterfinals. Five times, LIU-Post has earned a national No. 1 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, and the program has finished in the top-15 in the final season poll in each of the last seven years, including a program-high No. 7 in 2017.
“First and foremost, I want to thank Pat Lyons and the athletics department for the tremendous opportunity they have afforded me,” Lindberg said. “Seton Hall has a tremendous history in men’s soccer that I look forward to being a part of. I can’t wait to meet the team and get started.”
Lindberg’s teams have dominated in the ECC with three consecutive tournament championships that have followed incredible regular seasons. Since the start of 2015, LIU-Post has gone an astonishing 25-1-2 in ECC games, including an active 18-game unbeaten streak. Overall, in nine seasons at LIU-Post, Lindberg is 64-8-6 in the ECC, with only three losses coming in the final seven seasons.
The conference domination has helped Lindberg earn six ECC Coach of the Year awards (2017, 2015, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2009). He also is a three-time United Soccer Coaches East Region Coach of the Year (2017, 2015, 2014).
“I like to play attack-minded soccer that’s attractive to watch. Realistically, we also want to be solid and organized, tactically strong. I like to play good and attractive soccer, but I like to win more,” Lindberg added.
Lindberg has developed his student-athletes not only into championship winners but also into some of the best in the country. In his LIU-Post tenure, his student-athletes have garnered one Div. II National Player of the Year award, 10 United Soccer Coaches All-America selections, four United Soccer Coaches Academic All-America selections, 26 All-East Region selections, 44 All-ECC selections, six ECC Offensive Player of the Year awards, two ECC Defensive Player of the Year awards, three ECC Goalkeeper of the Year awards and five ECC Rookie of the Year awards.
Prior to his tremendous nine-year run at LIU-Post, Lindberg was the head coach at his alma mater, Southampton College, from 2002-05. He posted a four-year record of 30-14-7 that included a regular season NYCAC title in his first season. Lindberg helped to push Southampton to the national stage, with the program climbing as high as No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches national poll during his time.
In addition to his success in the head coaching ranks, Lindberg has a strong background in the professional and academy ranks. From 2006-07 he was the head coach and general manager of the New York Hampton Surf, a professional indoor soccer club and member of the American Indoor Soccer League (AISL). Lindberg coached the Met Oval Development Academy in Brooklyn from 2007-10, training 15-18 year olds in the USSF Development Academy system. During his time in Brooklyn, three of his charges were selected for U.S. National team training camps. Lindberg also served as the head coach of the Brooklyn Knights of the USL Premier Development League for the 2012 season, guiding the Knights to a four-win improvement from the prior campaign.
Lindberg received a United States Soccer Federation “A” License in 2013 and a “B” License in 2011. He holds a pair of United Soccer Coaches Special Topics Diplomas as well as an Advanced National Diploma from the Organization.
Originally from Sweden, Lindberg was a member of the men’s soccer team at Southampton from 1998-2001 before graduating with a degree in Business Administration in 2002. He earned a Masters of Business Administration from Long Island University in 2004.
