Former University of Virginia standout Ahkeel Rodney enters his second season as SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer assistant coach in 2017.
“It is a dream come true to be given the opportunity to coach at SUNY Old Westbury,” said Rodney. “I look forward to assisting head coach Patrick Corvetti during the process of bringing Old Westbury back to its winning ways by using my passion and experience to elevate the program both on and off the field.”
Rodney arrives in Old Westbury after serving as Corvetti’s varsity assistant coach at Elmont Memorial High School from 2015-16.
“Rodney brings a tremendous amount of experience around the game of soccer and is a great addition to the program,” said Corvetti. “He was an exceptional player and I believe he will be an exceptional coach. I am fortunate to have him on my coaching staff.”
The Elmont, New York native played two seasons at Virginia, where he helped lead the Cavaliers to the 2009 NCAA Division I National Championship as a freshman. Rodney earned his bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Virginia in 2013, and finished his playing career with two goals and two assists in 32 games. He was also a member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team that competed in the 2009 Copa Chivas Tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico. He also competed on the U.S. Under-18 National Team at the Nike Friendly Tournament in 2007.
Rodney collected all-america, all-state, all-city, and all-county honors as a star forward at Elmont Memorial High School. He totaled 74 goals and 52 assists during his prep playing career, and was tabbed Newsday’s Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008 before being recognized as a 2008 All-American by the NSCAA and ESPN RISE.
